A Centrally Planned Economy is an economic system in which the government makes most major decisions about the production, distribution, and pricing of goods and services. Instead of relying primarily on market demand and private businesses, a central authority determines how resources should be allocated to meet the country's economic goals.

In a centrally planned economy, the government decides what products businesses should manufacture, how much they should produce, and how resources should be distributed. It may also control wages, prices, and investment decisions. This system aims to reduce economic inequality and ensure that essential goods and services are available to the population.

One major advantage of a centrally planned economy is that the government can direct resources toward national priorities, such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and public housing. It can also coordinate large-scale projects without depending entirely on private investment.

However, this economic system has certain disadvantages. Limited competition can reduce innovation and efficiency. Government planners may also struggle to predict consumer demand accurately, sometimes resulting in shortages or excess production.

The Soviet Union historically operated under a centrally planned economy, while modern Cuba retains significant central planning alongside market-oriented reforms. China also uses a mixed economic model, combining government direction with market mechanisms.

Overall, a centrally planned economy prioritises government coordination over market forces. Its effectiveness depends on how well economic decisions meet people's needs while managing resources efficiently.
