I recently needed to remove sensitive information from an old hard drive before giving the computer to someone else. The drive contained personal documents, photos, work files, and other private data.
At first, I deleted the files and emptied the Recycle Bin, but I learned that this does not necessarily remove the data permanently. I also considered formatting the drive, but I wanted a method that would make the old data much harder to recover.
I then used data wipe software to securely erase the hard drive. The software allowed me to select the drive and wipe the stored data instead of simply deleting individual files. After the wiping process was completed, I could reuse or dispose of the drive without leaving the old information readily accessible.
For anyone planning to sell, donate, or dispose of an old hard drive, using a proper data wiping method can be more suitable than normal file deletion when the goal is to remove sensitive information.
