Denver is no stranger to snow. Nestled along Colorado's Front Range at an elevation of 5,280 feet, the Mile High City experiences dramatic weather swings that can transform a mild autumn afternoon into a full-fledged winter storm within hours. While seasonal snowfall is a normal part of life, several extraordinary blizzards have rewritten the city's history, disrupted transportation, damaged infrastructure, and tested the resilience of residents.

These storms were more than weather events—they became defining moments that influenced emergency planning, road maintenance, forecasting technology, building standards, and public awareness. Looking back at Denver's most destructive winter storms offers valuable lessons for today's residents and demonstrates how preparedness has evolved over more than a century.

Why Denver Is Vulnerable to Historic Winter Storms

Denver sits in a unique geographic location where cold Arctic air frequently collides with moisture from the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. The nearby Rocky Mountains amplify snowfall through upslope flow, forcing moist air upward where it cools and produces heavy snow.

Because of these conditions, Denver can experience snowfall ranging from a few inches to several feet in only a day or two. Heavy, wet snow is especially dangerous because it places tremendous weight on roofs, trees, and power lines while making roads nearly impassable.

Throughout history, several storms have stood apart due to their sheer size and lasting impact.

The Great Blizzard of December 1913

Dates: December 1–5, 1913

Snowfall in Denver: Approximately 45.7 inches

No discussion of Denver winter history begins anywhere other than the legendary Blizzard of 1913. Even more than a century later, it remains the largest snowstorm ever officially recorded in Denver. The storm buried the city beneath nearly four feet of heavy snow over several days, catching residents almost completely unprepared.

At the time, automobiles were still relatively uncommon, and many streets depended on horse-drawn transportation. Streetcars became immobilized almost immediately as snow accumulated faster than crews could clear tracks.

Communication was limited, making it difficult for communities to understand the storm's severity. Schools closed, businesses shut down, and travel nearly ceased across the region.

Human Impact

The storm isolated neighborhoods for days. Families remained trapped inside homes while food deliveries were interrupted. Livestock losses across Colorado were significant as ranches became inaccessible.

Thousands of volunteers joined city workers in removing mountains of snow from downtown streets using shovels, horse-drawn wagons, and early mechanical equipment. Cleanup lasted nearly a month before normal activity fully resumed.

Damage

Although precise dollar figures are impossible to compare with today's economy, the storm caused extensive economic disruption through business closures, transportation paralysis, and infrastructure damage.

The Blizzard of 1913 established a benchmark that every future Denver snowstorm would inevitably be compared against.

The November 1946 Snowstorm

Dates: November 2–4, 1946

Snowfall in Denver: Approximately 30.4 inches

After three decades without another truly historic snowfall, Denver experienced another massive early-season storm in November 1946.

Unlike many winter storms that occur later in the season, this one struck before residents had fully transitioned into winter routines. Trees still carried leaves, increasing the amount of snow that branches could collect.

Heavy, moisture-rich snow caused widespread tree failures throughout neighborhoods.
