I used to think climate control in storage was just an upsell, until Dubai proved me wrong.
First time I needed storage was during a quick move from JLT to Al Barsha. I picked the cheapest unit I could find, standard warehouse style. It was fine for random boxes and a spare suitcase, but after about 6 weeks I opened a carton and the “old apartment smell” had turned into a damp, sweet funk. A couple of paperbacks had wavy pages, and one framed print had a slight ripple. Nothing catastrophic, but it made me nervous.
Second time, I tried to be smarter. I packed everything in plastic bins, added moisture absorbers, and wrapped the sofa and mattress properly. Better, but still not great. The bins helped, yet anything fabric based (winter clothes, cushions) picked up that stored-in-a-hot-place smell. Also, electronics made me anxious, especially if you are storing them longer than a month.
After that I switched to a climate controlled unit. I found a place via self storage Dubai when I was between leases, and it was the first time I stopped thinking about what was happening to my stuff while it sat there. It cost more, but I stopped replacing small ruined items, which adds up.
My rule of thumb now: * Climate control: books, photos, documents, clothes, mattresses, leather, instruments, electronics * Non-climate: tools, gym gear, kitchen stuff, basic furniture you do not mind airing out later
Side note: if you are moving often here, checking listings and timing your handover matters. I’ve used Dubizzle more than once to line up a place and avoid storing things for “just two weeks” that turns into two months.
For Dubai, I’d say climate control is not always needed, but for anything you care about, it is worth it.
