I still remember the first time I saw a massive archive system being powered down. Everything looked so modern on the outside, yet deep inside, the real backbone was something surprisingly old school. That moment raised a question that stuck with me: how reliable are these systems when everything around them keeps changing so fast?
In one discussion with a storage engineer, he mentioned that data tape cartridges are still used in critical backup environments because they can survive decades if stored properly. He even shared a case where a disaster recovery test restored data from tapes that were older than some of the staff working there. That really changed my perception of reliability.
It made me realize that sometimes the most trusted technology is not the newest one, but the one that quietly keeps proving itself when it matters most.
