The social media survey also includes a nice graph every year that shows the percentage growth of the platforms. When I looked at the new graph from the 2021 survey, I initially didn't see any difference from the 2020 graph . That is, until I compared them. The differences are minimal, but if you look at both graphs, you'll see, among other things, that WhatsApp usage is increasing slightly more sharply.
More striking, in my opinion, is YouTube 's decline . If you just looked at the 2020 chart, you'd predict YouTube would grow again this year. But the decline has already begun. This already makes me curious about next year's results. Of course, many video platforms are emerging, such as BitChute and Twitch . And the video options on other platforms are also expanding. Think Stories, IGTV, and Reels. Will YouTube's usage decline again next year? My gut feeling is that it will.

Twitter 's erratic trend doesn't really tell us anything. Although I do predict a decline starting this year due to the growing popularity of the Twitter look-alike platform Gab .
The biggest climbers in this graph (in percentage terms) are Instagram and LinkedIn , up 5% and 6% respectively. All in all, these big five platforms are relatively stable. By "big five," I mean WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and LinkedIn. These platforms have between 5 million (LinkedIn) and 12.4 million (WhatsApp) users. Twitter falls outside of this group, with "only" 2.9 million users.
Instagram In 2019, the number of Instagram users continued to grow strongly. Last year, this increase leveled off, mainly due to young people between the ages of 15 and 19. This year, growth has declined again. Instagram is barely growing in users under 40.
If this trend continues, there's a good chance Instagram will stop growing altogether next year. Will the number of users then remain stuck at around 6 million? Perhaps LinkedIn will even overtake Instagram!
Pinterest, Twitter, Snapchat, TikTok and Tumblr I secretly find the developments on the platforms below much more interesting than those of the big five. Just look at the growth in the number of users of TikTok (+ 149%) and Tumblr (+ 24%).
Table from the social media research showing how fast the platforms are growing. TikTok With over a million new users, TikTok is once again the big winner among social media platforms. Its growth is enormous. While TikTok was still discussed as a "newcomer" in last year's article (it wasn't even mentioned in the 2019 social media survey), this channel has already become an indispensable part of the social media landscape.
And TikTok's daily usage has also skyrocketed (see table below). 836,000 users use TikTok daily. That's almost 200% more than last year!
Besides TikTok, Tumblr is also growing rapidly! Are you familiar with this platform? It's a microblogging channel and social media platform rolled into one. On this platform, you can easily share virtually any type of content you want, including text, audio, video, images, and links. This platform is especially popular among young people.
Pinterest's growth is also remarkable. With 337,000 more users, the channel has grown by 10%. The increase in daily use is particularly striking. While WhatsApp, for example, is used 5% more daily than in 2020, Pinterest's figure is 24%! So, we're using Pinterest much more daily than we did last year! Could this be because we're all spending more time at home? And therefore more focused on our interiors.
